Dangau Langkawi: A Hidden Gem of Langkawi’s Traditional Malay Culinary Scene

As soon as I stepped into this restaurant, I felt like it was something special. It’s a place you should definitely visit at least once, if not more, because it’s not just about the yummy food, but also the great vibe. Dangau Langkawi is like a hidden treasure in Langkawi, surrounded by beautiful nature and a really nice atmosphere. It’s tucked away behind Makam Mahsuri, so it’s a peaceful escape from the busy city life. The restaurant’s location lets you enjoy the lovely scenery of Langkawi’s rice fields and traditional village vibes. One cool thing about Dangau Langkawi is that the staff all wear traditional Malay costumes, like what Hang Tuah would wear. It adds a special touch to the whole experience!

At Dangau Langkawi, you can enjoy delicious Malay food that’s full of flavours. They offer a variety of traditional Malay dishes, from tasty ikan bakar (grilled fish) to rich gulai ikan (fish curry) and udang sambal petai (prawns with stink beans in chili paste). You shouldn’t miss trying the siput retak seribu masak lemak (clam cooked in coconut milk), sotong goreng kunyit (turmeric fried squid), and fresh ulam-ulaman (Malay salad) with assorted sambal belacan. The prices are fair and won’t break the bank, making it a great value for the tasty meals they serve.

What makes Dangau Langkawi special is its lovely atmosphere that takes you back to nostalgic village life. The restaurant’s main attraction is the ‘dangau,’ a traditional Malay hut where you can dine surrounded by peaceful padi fields. With the gentle breeze and beautiful sunset over the mountains, it feels like you’re in a picture-perfect scene. That’s why Dangau Langkawi is so popular among Instagrammers who love taking selfies and the beautiful nature around them. Absolutely aesthetic!

Apart from the yummy food and beautiful views, Dangau Langkawi is known for its excellent service. They make sure every guest has a great time. The staff are really friendly and welcoming, and you can even play traditional game like congkak while you wait for your food. We were told that they even have live music on Wednesdays, which adds to the fun atmosphere. It is all about making your dining experience special and memorable!

Based on my experience, Dangau Langkawi shows how simple things and Malaysia’s culinary are really special. The delicious dishes, breathtaking views, and friendly service make it more than just a place to eat. It feels like you’re experiencing the true essence of Langkawi.

AVANTÉ Hotel’s Santapan Rasa Sayang 2024 Ramadan Buffet Dinner Returns!

Great news, guys! The highly anticipated Santapan Rasa Sayang 2024 Buffet Dinner is back! Reminiscing the roots and origins of iconic recipes from all across Malaysia. Served at Chek’s Coffee House, AVANTÉ Hotel, guests can sample signature dishes handpicked by the hotel’s Chefs, featuring the diverse ingredients and flavors of each state.

Daily, a different variety of dishes will be served and rotated throughout the buffet period. This season’s signature dishes are presented by Chef de Cuisine, Chef Arih bin Ahmad and Junior Sous Chef (Malay Kitchen), Chef Yana — Daging bakar masak lemak, a Negeri Sembilan classic, harks back to Chef Arih’s fond memories of his mother’s cooking. Spiced with serai, cili padi and kunyit, the smoked beef tenderloin (‘daging salai’) is then paired with creamy santan, a combination that melds spicy, rich and smoky flavors, a traditional dish that whets the appetite.

Over from the East Coast, Sotong Sumbat Bakar packs a spicy kick with sambal belacan, dried chilli, creamy santan and serai, stuffed in fresh squid and grilled to crunchy perfection. For the first time, Chef Arih and Chef Yana have also taken on the challenge of combining their recipes to present a harmonious medley, the classic Rendang Tok. A Perak delicacy, beef tenderloin is marinated by our Chefs in a myriad of spices including coconut kerisik, lemongrass, kunyit, garlic, onion, star anise, cinnamon and more, slow cooked to maximise its burst of flavor.

Other signature dishes include Perut Masak Lemak Cili Api and Ayam Percik. With unmissable showstoppers of tender, juicy Kambing Kebuli with rice, sliced and served piping hot at the buffet, guests are welcome to sample all, from Rendang Ayam Hijau, Ketupat Palas, Satay, Sup Tulang and Murtabak, to Gearbox Soup, Kebab, Roti John , Udang Masak Lemak, Ikan Patin Masak Tempoyak, Nasi Tomato, Sup Kambing/ Perut, Pecal & Lontong, Kerabu, Ulaman and more!

A fine selection of international dishes will also be served: black pepper fried crabs, sushi, salted egg squid, BBQ steak, Hong Kong braised Yee Mee to name a few. Catch our chefs making crispy sizzling Apam Balik, or enjoy the ‘Goreng-Goreng’ stall – Pisang, Sukun, Keledek, Cekodok, Cucur Bilis and Cucur Manis. End the night on a sweet note, Dodol, Kuih-Muih, ABC, Bubur, assorted French pastries and fresh local fruits.

Tropical Escapes: Discovering Paradise in Lion Marine, Pulau Singa Besar, Langkawi

Have you heard of Pulau Singa Besar (Singa Besar Island)? Pulau Singa Besar is situated southwest of Langkawi, and well-known for its pristine tropical beauty, boasting sandy beaches, dense jungle, and rugged limestone formations sprawling across 1,572 acres (636 hectares). Serving as a wildlife sanctuary, it shelters a diverse array of creatures including macaques, mouse deer, hornbills, peacocks, lizards, and eagles. I am so lucky to be able to visit this island via the arrangement of Lion Marine Agency. By a chartered ferry ride from Teluk Baru Jetty to Lion Marine, we reached this pristine island in just 10 to 15 minutes, with the boat docks at Lion Marine, granting passage to a realm of natural splendor.

Nature’s Welcome: The Beautiful Beach
As we landed on the beach of Lion Marine, we were welcomed by the beautiful view of Lion Marine’s clean beach. The sand on this half acre land was soft and the water was a sparkling blue, reflecting the sunlight. The peaceful atmosphere invited us to relax and unwind, with the sound of the waves soothing our minds.

Activities to Embrace the Island’s Charms
At Lion Marine, there are plenty of things to do to make your visit unforgettable. For example, this is the best place to take a leisurely walk along the coast while snapping pictures of the peaceful scenes.

As we were feeling adventurous, we tried snorkeling to see the coral reefs and amazing sea creatures underwater. It was my first time snorkeling and it was pure joy and excitement! I took some time to get used to breathing through the snorkel, but it was all part of the fun! Oh, and a handy note – there are two restroom facilities equipped with showers available, ensuring convenience for cleaning up after our aquatic adventures. Please be aware that while these facilities may not be the cleanest, they are still functional and suitable for use.

There’s a café on-site where you can savor delicious food and drinks. Picture yourself sipping fresh coconut water right by the beach – it’s truly a blissful experience! Moreover, Lion Marine Agency arranges beachside barbecues upon request, just like the one we enjoyed. It was wonderful having the staff assist with the barbecue while we enjoyed a variety of dishes including grilled squids, prawns, chicken wings, sausages, satay, and fried rice.

A Haven for Team Building
Besides its stunning environment, Lion Marine is an excellent spot for fostering teamwork and friendship. If you’re a corporate company or part of a large group, you can organize team-building activities here, strengthening bonds among your colleagues that extend beyond the island. Whether it’s enjoying beach games, tackling challenges together, or collaborating on group projects, Lion Marine offers opportunities for shared experiences and personal development.

If you are looking for some beach fun and island hopping packages, don’t hesitate to contact Mr Hisham Yem from Lion Marine Agency at +6012-434 8400.

2 Must-Visit Attractions in Langkawi : Sky Bridge via SkyCab and Taman Lagenda

A trip to Langkawi wouldn’t be complete without visiting these two key destinations: the Langkawi Sky Bridge (accessible via Langkawi SkyCab) and Taman Lagenda (Lagenda Park). Fortunately, I found time to discover these must-see spots during my Langkawi getaway.

Langkawi SkyCab’s entrance lies north of Telaga Harbour, Pantai Kok, nestled within ‘Oriental Village’ at the base of the Machinchang Mountain range. Positioned northwest of Langkawi International Airport, along the island’s western coast, it’s approximately a 30-minute drive from Kuah town and just 15 minutes from the airport.

LANGKAWI SKYCAB & LANGKAWI SKY BRIDGE
I was truly amazed by the exhilarating adventure and stunning panoramas I encountered during my ride on the Langkawi SkyCab and across the Langkawi Sky Bridge! The Langkawi Sky Bridge, a 125-meter curved pedestrian cable-stayed bridge, offers an enchanting journey atop Gunung Machinchang. Accessible via the Langkawi SkyCab, also known as the Langkawi Cable Car, this iconic attraction offers various gondola services to cater to every traveler’s preference.

Types of Gondola
I embarked on a thrilling ride with the Bottom Glass Gondola, which provided an adrenaline-pumping view of the forest and mountains beneath the feet. There are other types of gondola as well. The 53 units of Normal Gondolas can accommodate up to six persons each, and promises a seamless and captivating adventure. For those seeking luxury and privacy, the VIP Gondola offers exclusive services with delectable food and drinks served onboard. How I wish I could try this one day. For an exhilarating experience, opt for the 360° Gondola, embracing the open-air design amidst scenic surroundings.

Express Lane
It was a bustling Sunday with a massive crowd during my trip, but I was fortunate to have the Express Lane pass. During peak seasons, it’s a smart move to grab the Express Lane passes to skip long queues and ensure a smoother and faster journey.

Walk or Glide?
Upon reaching the Top Station, you can access or exit the Langkawi Sky Bridge either by taking the mountain trail, which could require 10-20 minutes of walking, or opt for the SkyGlide. Although the SkyGlide might entail a longer wait in the queue, it offers a less strenuous alternative to reaching and exiting the bridge.

Upcoming Attraction
The Eagle’s Nest Skywalk Langkawi, set to become the longest freestanding cantilever skywalk globally, has now open its doors to the public. Too bad it was closed for maintenance during my trip. I’m eagerly awaiting the opportunity to explore this remarkable attraction next.

TAMAN LAGENDA LANGKAWI

During my visit to Kuah town, I managed to take a quick stroll through Taman Lagenda. Taman Lagenda, also known as Lagenda Park, is a captivating open-air museum nestled in Kuah town, Langkawi. It offers a delightful showcase of Langkawi’s rich cultural heritage and natural marvels through meticulously landscaped gardens and exhibits.

Guys, be prepared to embark on a cultural journey through various sections of the park, each representing different aspects of Langkawi’s folklore, legends, and history. The park is adorned with intricately designed sculptures, statues, and structures depicting mythical creatures, legendary heroes, and historical events. Entrance is free and it’s definitely a great place for photo op!

Here are some examples of the folklore and legends showcased in Taman Lagenda:

Mahsuri
Among the renowned tales of Langkawi is the legend of Mahsuri, a young woman unjustly accused of adultery. Legend has it that Mahsuri faced a wrongful death sentence, subsequently casting a curse upon Langkawi for seven generations.

Pregnant Maiden Lake
This story narrates the romance between a fairy princess and a mortal man. The princess, enchanted by love, assumed the guise of a beautiful maiden to wed him. However, when her husband violated a sacred taboo, she reverted to her fairy form and vanished into the depths of the lake. Pregnant Maiden Lake, a notable highlight in Taman Lagenda, symbolizes this timeless legend.

The Battle of Garuda and Jentayu
This folklore depicts a mythical battle between Garuda, a divine bird in Hindu mythology, and Jentayu, a giant eagle from Malay folklore. The battle is said to have taken place over Langkawi, and visitors can witness sculptures depicting this epic confrontation in Taman Lagenda.

The Legend of the Seven Wells
Among all, I personally find this one very interesting. This legend portrays an epic clash between Garuda, a revered bird deity in Hindu mythology, and Jentayu, a colossal eagle from Malay folklore. Fought over the skies of Langkawi, this monumental battle is brought to life through sculptures within Taman Lagenda, allowing visitors to witness the legendary confrontation firsthand.

Mat Chincang and Mat Raya
This tale recounts the saga of two legendary giants, Mat Chincang and Mat Raya, locked in a fierce rivalry for the affections of a princess. Their tumultuous battle sculpted the very landscape of Langkawi into the majestic mountains present today. Within Taman Lagenda, visitors can behold sculptures that vividly depict this monumental clash, immortalizing the epic confrontation for generations to come.

I’m delighted to see that these folklore and legends are preserved in the park, reflecting the wealth and variety of cultural and historical tales of Langkawi. They offer visitors a deeper understanding of Langkawi’s heritage and traditions, enriching their experience and appreciation of this beautiful island.
