Exploring the Wonders of Kedah’s Hidden Gem, Gua Sireh in Baling

Gua Sireh, located in the tranquil town of Kampung Padang Cik Mas, Mukim Pulai, is a popular destination for both locals and visitors from abroad. This cave, located only 20 meters from Baling town, combines natural beauty and historical value. The local citizens’ association initiated the exploration, which began in 2019 and demonstrates the community’s dedication to increasing tourism. The committee members of Kampung Padang Che Mas are currently working to conserve Gua Sireh.

About Gua Sireh
Gua Sireh measures 192 meters wide and 60 to 80 meters tall. The cave is decorated with multicolored neon lights, which illuminate the walls and provide a serene atmosphere. Its geological features, such as stalagmites and stalactites, reveal a rich history extending back thousands of years.

Starting Our Exploration
We started our exploration of Gua Sireh with a gentle warm-up, preparing ourselves for the enchanting journey that awaited. Climbing a staircase to the cave’s opening heightened our anticipation, and the distinct scent of bat guano in the air added an authentic touch to the natural ambiance.

Different Limestone Formations
My awe deepened the moment I saw a massive stalagmite in the shape of sirih junjung (a stack of betel nut leaf using in Malay’s wedding ceremony) at the entrance, a breathtaking introduction to the wonders concealed within the cave. Continuing our path, I marveled at the diverse limestone formations, like lion’s head, ear hole, broken boat and many more, each unveiling a new facet of nature’s artistry. The most interesting one is at the Gong Gallery, where you can really hit a huge limestone to produce gong-like noises.

Amazed with Nature
The white walls of the cave, lit up gently with colourful lights, made the cave look even more beautiful, making us realize how amazing natural forces have shaped the underground landscape. As we walked along safe paths with sturdy railings, we not only felt excited but also developed a deep respect for the delicate balance and captivating charm of Gua Sireh’s underground world.

Gua Sireh’s Historical Value
According to research carried out by the National University of Malaysia, Gua Sireh has been inhabited since 16,000-17,000 years ago, as demonstrated by fossilized shells and ancient formations within the cave. The finding elevates the natural wonder’s historical significance.

Becoming A Source of Income
Since the 1960s, Gua Sireh has been functioning as a place to collect bat guano for fertilizer and still is. Today, the cave has also become a popular tourist destination, providing an economic boost to the local community.

Facilities
The community has taken the initiative to enhance the cave, constructing facilities such as safe paths, electricity, and lighting. They’ve even arranged for cave guides to assure guests’ safety while they explore.

Eco-Tourism Retreat at Dusun Tok Wak in Ulu Legong, Baling

One with Pak Long & his team

Craving for a break from the daily grind? Escape to the tranquility of Ulu Legong, Baling, and immerse yourself in the distinct allure of Dusun Tok Wak. Nature lovers and foodies alike are drawn to this undiscovered treasure, which offers the ideal fusion of eco-tourism experiences, river dining, and traditional Malay village life.

Riverfront Feasting with Pak Long’s Specialties
Picture this: tables and chairs placed directly in the river, a feast of regional cuisine chosen by none other than Pak Long, the owner of Dusun Tok Wak. For tea break, we were served with Pak Long’s specialties, such as Kopi Madu Lebah Kelulut (Stingless Bee Honey Coffee), Teh Madu Lebah Kelulut (Stingless Bee Honey Tea) and Mi Goreng Madu Lebah Kelulut (Stingless Bee Honey Fried Noodles). Everything tastes so good. Well, maybe that’s why “Keras, pekat, melekat!” is the slogan of the stingless bee honey coffee from Dusun Tok Wak. Just so you know, you are not allowed to bring your own food. Instead, schedule a reservation in advance with Pak Long and his staff so that they can get everything ready for you.

Dinner at Dusun Tok Wak was a delight, featuring a barbecue spread of marinated beef, chicken, tiger prawns, sausages, fried meehoon, and fried rice enjoyed by the riverside with a group of friends. The evening took a lively turn when Pak Long, the mastermind behind Dusun Tok Wak, joined us. His friendly and outgoing personality infused the night with laughter, turning it into an enjoyable and memorable experience.

An Ideal Healing Spot
To me, Dusun Tok Wak works perfectly well as a mental health retreat in the peaceful surroundings of nature. A tranquil haven is created by lush greenery, calming river, and immersive experiences like riverfront dining and river bathing. Besides the sound of nature like flowing water and chirping bird, Pak Long’s gracious hospitality makes it even better as a nurturing spot to recharge and recuperate.

Stingless Bee Farm
At Dusun Tok Wak, they’ve got their very own Stingless Bee Farm. Cool, right? These little guys are busy making madu kelulut, a special kind of honey. And you know what’s awesome? Pak Long, the master chef at Dusun Tok Wak, uses this honey in his cooking. So, when you’re enjoying the tasty dishes here, you’re getting a touch of that unique honey flavour. It’s like a sweet bonus straight from the farm to your plate and cup!

Sustainability and Accolades
Dusun Tok Wak doesn’t just talk the talk; it walks the eco-friendly walk. This location is leading the way in responsible tourism and has been nominated for the ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Standard (Gastronomy) Rural Category. It is an acknowledgement to their dedication to keeping Ulu Legong beautiful and sustainable for future generations.

Pak Long, the Storyteller
Mr. Mohd Akhir bin Ismail, also referred to as Pak Long, is 66 years old and still appears youthful—he could easily pass for someone in their 40s! In his fit and petite body frame, Pak Long has been actively managing Dusun Tok Wak since 2016, spearheading a team that is primarily made up of his kin. Pak Long, who is constantly coming up with new ideas for marketing, has embraced the world of TikTok and gained over 40,000 followers (to date) through his engaging ‘live’ sessions. His witty jokes and easygoing style resonate with many viewers, and I thoroughly enjoyed his insights during our brief visit to Dusun Tok Wak.

For more information about Dusun Tok Wak, follow their social media now:

Conquering the Heights in A Memorable Climb on Gunung Baling

Enjoying the view at the peak

I am proud of myself for making it to the peak of Gunung Baling (Baling Mountain), a climb I did with other blogger and influencer friends. Nestled in the charming town of Baling in Kedah, Malaysia, Gunung Baling stands as a majestic limestone outcrop, beckoning adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts. With a height of 546 meters above sea level, this natural wonder promises a challenging ascent, rewarding climbers with not only a sense of accomplishment but also breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views.

Hello from everyone up here

The Trail
The ascent up Gunung Baling follows a single, well-marked trail, making it accessible to both novice and experienced hikers. The journey begins at the end of the car park, where a 1.85-kilometer trek awaits, featuring a height elevation of approximately 450 meters. The trail is divided into three stages, each offering a unique challenge.

Before the climb

We gathered at the starting point of Gunung Baling at around 4.20am. Before starting the hike, we warmed up to get ourselves ready, physically and mentally. Some of us had light breakfast like cookies and buns while some went to the toilet as there’s none along the trail. Before the hike, I have zero idea of what to expect. All I knew was it’s a hike uphill with some forest trails and that’s it! How daring right? We started our climb at around 5am. From my understanding, our group was arranged to start climbing earlier than its official operating hours.

After climbing Gunung Baling, here’s some information you would want to know:

Moderate Forest Trail: The initial stage involves a steep climb on soil and muddy trails, with sections reaching inclines of 30 to 45 degrees. Handrails provide support in the steeper areas, ensuring a secure ascent. There are 3 check points here where hikers can take short breaks and also a wakaf / surau for Muslim prayers.

Rocky Terrain: Somewhere after the surau, the climb then leads to a flat and gradual trail, including stairs and jungle paths. As the trek progresses, the terrain becomes rockier, adding an extra layer of challenge to the journey.

Summit Ridge: The final route marks the ascent to the summit, where the trail becomes increasingly rocky. There are rock obstacles where we need to navigate through some challenging sections, culminating in a crawl under rocks to reach the ridge line. It’s pretty challenging but manageable. This part definitely adds in the fun to the climb, but remember to stay cautious and careful while doing these stuns. The summit promises a rewarding spectacular view, making the entire journey worthwhile.

Personal Value & Lessons
Reflecting on my experience during this ascent, the climb took approximately 2 hours uphill and another 2 hours downhill (though the exact timings may vary). In this condensed 4-hour journey, I unfolded several valuable personal lessons:

  1. Patience and Persistence: The climb reinforced the importance of patience and persistence. Despite the challenging terrain, the ultimate reward awaited those who persevered. Each step forward was a step closer to the breathtaking views at the summit.
  2. Teamwork Triumphs: Collaborative efforts proved to be highly effective. The climb highlighted the significance of teamwork, emphasizing how mutual support and assistance among team members significantly enhance the overall experience.
  3. Individual Focus: During solo portions of the climb, the need for individual focus became apparent. Staying concentrated on personal objectives was crucial, ensuring a steady and safe progression through the challenging sections.
  4. Enjoying the Journey: The climb reminded me not to fixate solely on the destination. While reaching the summit was undoubtedly rewarding, taking pleasure in the journey itself added a layer of fulfillment. The process, with its challenges and triumphs, became an integral part of the overall experience.

In just four hours, Gunung Baling provided a crash course to me; in endurance, teamwork, individual focus, and the appreciation of the journey—an invaluable set of personal lessons that will resonate beyond the mountain ascent.

Who’s who here?

What to Prepare for the Hike:

  1. Footwear: Sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes with excellent traction.
  2. Clothing: Wear lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing suitable for tropical climates. Consider long sleeves and pants to protect against scratches and insects.
  3. Backpack: A well-fitted backpack to carry essentials like water, snacks, first aid kit, and extra clothing.
  4. Water and Hydration System: Carry enough water to stay hydrated during the climb. Consider a hydration system or reusable water bottle.
  5. Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and bring sunglasses to protect against the sun’s rays.
  6. Insect Repellent: Guard against insects, especially in the forested sections of the trail.
  7. Headlamp/Flashlight: Essential for low-light conditions, especially if you plan to start early or return late.
  8. Camera: Capture the stunning views and memorable moments along the way.
  9. First Aid Kit: Basic medical supplies for minor injuries, blisters, or other emergencies.
  10. Snacks and Energy Food: Pack energy-boosting snacks like cookies, bread, granola bars, or energy gels.

Weng Valley: Hidden Gems and Culinary Delights

Nestled in the scenic landscapes of Baling, Kedah, Weng Valley stands as a testament to the warmth and charm of rural Malaysia. As I embarked on a journey to this hidden gem, I was not only welcomed by the villagers but also treated to an immersive experience that showcased the rich tapestry of their community.

A Culinary Adventure
We were welcomed by the villagers from the moment we stepped into Weng Valley, with a variety of traditional Malaysian goodies. The locals, proud as punch of their culinary skills, treated me to a buffet of delights. Kuih cucur jawa, sweet kuih bingka sawit, peknga (coconut pancake) and roti Arab – I felt like I hit the foodie jackpot, getting a real taste of the local flavours. These make great breakfast or snacks, especially when served with hot coffee or tea.

Splash, Shop, and Savour
Weng Valley isn’t just about incredible eats and nature vibes—it’s got a swimming pool, that comes with a water playground, perfect for cooling off in style. Excellent spot for everyone, adults and kids. And as you chill around, don’t miss the cool little pop-up stores in containers nearby. They’re like hidden gems, selling everything from local goodies to worthy souvenirs and tasty bites.

Buzzin’ with Nature
Weng Valley isn’t just about satisfying your taste buds; it’s a playground for nature lovers too. The Lebah Kelulut Weng Valley bee farm was a buzzing hive of excitement. I got up close and personal with the world of stingless bees, not to mention tasting some of their honey and sipping on fresh honey! To me, the stingless bee honey tasted a little bit sourish sweet and it taste good when added into coffee. They also sell freshly harvested honey and locally produced coffee powder too. For your information, there is also a cucumber farm nearby – a green paradise showcasing the village’s commitment to farming and biodiversity. It’s also my first time seeing cucumbers hanging from the vine. When a city boy goes into a kampung!

Upcycled Vibes
One of the coolest things about Weng Valley is how they jazz up their homes with recycled stuff. Tyres, bottles, rubber, towels, and toys become the hippest decorations you’ve ever seen. They upcycle these items and make them into different shapes like motorcycle, sunflowers, chairs, tables, fish, flower pots and many more. It’s like a crash course in creative sustainability, proving that you can turn everyday items into jaw-dropping decor.

Thrills and Chills
Adventure junkies, listen up! Weng Valley has got what you’re looking for. Adventures beckon at every turn, whether you’re tearing through an oil palm field on an ATV or gracefully gliding across a pond in a kayak. I opted for the ATV during my visit, and it was a decision I didn’t regret! We formed a convoy, navigating through the plantation, crossing small creeks, and maneuvering through mud pools, adding excitement to the entire journey.

Lunchtime Feast
After a day jam-packed with exploring, my taste buds were treated to a feast at lunchtime. Picture this: gulai daging batang pisang, ayam masak merah, and kerabu pucuk paku. All served up with a side of ulam and sambal and fresh coconut water – a culinary finale that summed up the essence of Weng Valley. Definitely a memorable trip for me.

For more info about Weng Valley, check out their Instagram or Facebook.

Other Attractions Along the Way
Since we travelled to Weng Valley, might as well, dropby these spots nearby for some refreshing water fun or nature healing.

Sebarau Park Campsite
Sebarau Park could be your go-to if you’re a fan of camping vibes. Nestled in the heart of Weng Dalam, Baling, Kedah, it’s like a chill spot surrounded by fruit orchards. They’ve got the basics covered – places to change, toilets, and a surau. However, please do not expect fancy chalets, but there are wooden and rattan huts for day visitors. The river water is really refreshing and by listening to the flowing water makes it a great spot for energy healing. For more info, WhatsApp 011-6488 1464 or Instagram.

Teratak Simpul
