MakLang by Ilham Ceramic: A Fusion of Pottery and Culinary Arts in Langkawi

The cafe does look very Insta-worthy

Langkawi has definitely changed a lot, for the better, of course. I am amazed that there’s this place called MakLang by Ilham Ceramic – a small cafe that serves local delicacies like Laksa Utara and Nasi Lemak, located in Kampung Bendang Baru which also provides pottery workshops and classes to their patrons.

Origins of MakLang by Ilham Ceramic
Founder, Mohammad Radzi Ismail’s journey into the food and beverage domain was not premeditated but born out of the persistent requests from his pottery students. Radzi started teaching pottery classes since 2020, during the pandemic. He noticed a recurring query from participants about the availability of food & refreshments. Responding to this demand, he initially started by sourcing local treats like kuih-muih and snacks from nearby stalls. However, as the suggestions to start a café grew. He saw an opportunity to enhance the overall experience for his clients and support the ceramic business further.

At the moment, the pottery class is on hiatus due to a staffing shortage resulting from the departure of one of their instructors. However, once a new teacher is onboarded, the classes will recommence. I am eagerly anticipating the resumption of classes. In the meantime, they continue crafting and selling pottery items such as plates, cups, and pots in their modest shop, alongside various other handicraft products.

Location and Ambiance
Situated adjacent to the pottery workshop and showroom on a plot of land owned by Radzi’s grandfather, MakLang by Ilham Ceramic opened its doors on 1 February 2023. The cozy structure exudes a welcoming atmosphere, providing patrons with a charming setting to enjoy a delightful fusion of art and culinary delights.

Homage to Mak Lang
Named in honour of Radzi’s mother, Barishah Hussein, affectionately known as Mak Lang in the village, the restaurant pays tribute to her culinary legacy. MakLang by Ilham Ceramic offers a diverse menu, spanning breakfast, lunch, and snacks, ensuring a delightful dining experience throughout the day.

They are open everyday, except Friday, 8am to 6pm and serve 7 kinds of laksa namely laksa biasa, laksa telur goreng, laksa isi ketam, laksa udang, laksa sambal sotong, laksa kepah and laksa campur (isi ketam + udang + sambal sotong). There are rice dishes too like nasi lemak, nasi sambal petai and others. They are also famous for their cucur udang for they sold out very quickly.

Preserving Family Recipes
Despite his initial reluctance to be labeled a ‘tukang masak’, Radzi took it upon himself to learn the cherished family recipes. Inspired by his mother’s culinary skill, who used to cater for large events and weddings, Radzi is now the guardian of these culinary traditions. With Mak Lang’s guidance, he ensures that these recipes endure and continue to tantalize taste buds which I personally think that he has successfully achieved this.

Honestly, I would return to this location for another serving of laksa, and ideally, by then, their pottery workshops will have resumed their usual schedule, allowing me to participate.

Exploring the Wonders of Kedah’s Hidden Gem, Gua Sireh in Baling

Gua Sireh, located in the tranquil town of Kampung Padang Cik Mas, Mukim Pulai, is a popular destination for both locals and visitors from abroad. This cave, located only 20 meters from Baling town, combines natural beauty and historical value. The local citizens’ association initiated the exploration, which began in 2019 and demonstrates the community’s dedication to increasing tourism. The committee members of Kampung Padang Che Mas are currently working to conserve Gua Sireh.

About Gua Sireh
Gua Sireh measures 192 meters wide and 60 to 80 meters tall. The cave is decorated with multicolored neon lights, which illuminate the walls and provide a serene atmosphere. Its geological features, such as stalagmites and stalactites, reveal a rich history extending back thousands of years.

Starting Our Exploration
We started our exploration of Gua Sireh with a gentle warm-up, preparing ourselves for the enchanting journey that awaited. Climbing a staircase to the cave’s opening heightened our anticipation, and the distinct scent of bat guano in the air added an authentic touch to the natural ambiance.

Different Limestone Formations
My awe deepened the moment I saw a massive stalagmite in the shape of sirih junjung (a stack of betel nut leaf using in Malay’s wedding ceremony) at the entrance, a breathtaking introduction to the wonders concealed within the cave. Continuing our path, I marveled at the diverse limestone formations, like lion’s head, ear hole, broken boat and many more, each unveiling a new facet of nature’s artistry. The most interesting one is at the Gong Gallery, where you can really hit a huge limestone to produce gong-like noises.

Amazed with Nature
The white walls of the cave, lit up gently with colourful lights, made the cave look even more beautiful, making us realize how amazing natural forces have shaped the underground landscape. As we walked along safe paths with sturdy railings, we not only felt excited but also developed a deep respect for the delicate balance and captivating charm of Gua Sireh’s underground world.

Gua Sireh’s Historical Value
According to research carried out by the National University of Malaysia, Gua Sireh has been inhabited since 16,000-17,000 years ago, as demonstrated by fossilized shells and ancient formations within the cave. The finding elevates the natural wonder’s historical significance.

Becoming A Source of Income
Since the 1960s, Gua Sireh has been functioning as a place to collect bat guano for fertilizer and still is. Today, the cave has also become a popular tourist destination, providing an economic boost to the local community.

Facilities
The community has taken the initiative to enhance the cave, constructing facilities such as safe paths, electricity, and lighting. They’ve even arranged for cave guides to assure guests’ safety while they explore.

Eco-Tourism Retreat at Dusun Tok Wak in Ulu Legong, Baling

One with Pak Long & his team

Craving for a break from the daily grind? Escape to the tranquility of Ulu Legong, Baling, and immerse yourself in the distinct allure of Dusun Tok Wak. Nature lovers and foodies alike are drawn to this undiscovered treasure, which offers the ideal fusion of eco-tourism experiences, river dining, and traditional Malay village life.

Riverfront Feasting with Pak Long’s Specialties
Picture this: tables and chairs placed directly in the river, a feast of regional cuisine chosen by none other than Pak Long, the owner of Dusun Tok Wak. For tea break, we were served with Pak Long’s specialties, such as Kopi Madu Lebah Kelulut (Stingless Bee Honey Coffee), Teh Madu Lebah Kelulut (Stingless Bee Honey Tea) and Mi Goreng Madu Lebah Kelulut (Stingless Bee Honey Fried Noodles). Everything tastes so good. Well, maybe that’s why “Keras, pekat, melekat!” is the slogan of the stingless bee honey coffee from Dusun Tok Wak. Just so you know, you are not allowed to bring your own food. Instead, schedule a reservation in advance with Pak Long and his staff so that they can get everything ready for you.

Dinner at Dusun Tok Wak was a delight, featuring a barbecue spread of marinated beef, chicken, tiger prawns, sausages, fried meehoon, and fried rice enjoyed by the riverside with a group of friends. The evening took a lively turn when Pak Long, the mastermind behind Dusun Tok Wak, joined us. His friendly and outgoing personality infused the night with laughter, turning it into an enjoyable and memorable experience.

An Ideal Healing Spot
To me, Dusun Tok Wak works perfectly well as a mental health retreat in the peaceful surroundings of nature. A tranquil haven is created by lush greenery, calming river, and immersive experiences like riverfront dining and river bathing. Besides the sound of nature like flowing water and chirping bird, Pak Long’s gracious hospitality makes it even better as a nurturing spot to recharge and recuperate.

Stingless Bee Farm
At Dusun Tok Wak, they’ve got their very own Stingless Bee Farm. Cool, right? These little guys are busy making madu kelulut, a special kind of honey. And you know what’s awesome? Pak Long, the master chef at Dusun Tok Wak, uses this honey in his cooking. So, when you’re enjoying the tasty dishes here, you’re getting a touch of that unique honey flavour. It’s like a sweet bonus straight from the farm to your plate and cup!

Sustainability and Accolades
Dusun Tok Wak doesn’t just talk the talk; it walks the eco-friendly walk. This location is leading the way in responsible tourism and has been nominated for the ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Standard (Gastronomy) Rural Category. It is an acknowledgement to their dedication to keeping Ulu Legong beautiful and sustainable for future generations.

Pak Long, the Storyteller
Mr. Mohd Akhir bin Ismail, also referred to as Pak Long, is 66 years old and still appears youthful—he could easily pass for someone in their 40s! In his fit and petite body frame, Pak Long has been actively managing Dusun Tok Wak since 2016, spearheading a team that is primarily made up of his kin. Pak Long, who is constantly coming up with new ideas for marketing, has embraced the world of TikTok and gained over 40,000 followers (to date) through his engaging ‘live’ sessions. His witty jokes and easygoing style resonate with many viewers, and I thoroughly enjoyed his insights during our brief visit to Dusun Tok Wak.

For more information about Dusun Tok Wak, follow their social media now:
