Why Casa del Rio Melaka is My Hotel Choice for A Staycation

A 5-Star Luxurious Stay at Casa del Rio Melaka
During my recent trip to Melaka, my wife and I had the pleasure of staying at Casa del Rio, a 5-star luxury hotel perfectly situated along the Melaka River. Just a short walk from Jonker Street, it offered the best of both worlds—convenience and tranquility. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by its Mediterranean-inspired design, with warm tones, arched windows, water fountains and elegant architecture that transported me to a different world.

A Room with A View
The Studio Lago/River King Room was spacious and beautifully designed, complete with a private balcony overlooking the Melaka River. I loved starting my mornings with a cup of coffee while taking in the peaceful view. The highlight of the room was the huge bathtub—perfect for a relaxing soak after a long day of exploring Melaka’s historical streets. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and every detail in the room reflected the hotel’s commitment to luxury and comfort. Other facilities include coffee machine, TV, hair dryer, a sofa, iron & ironing board, robes and more.

Rooftop Pool & Gym
One of the best features of Casa del Rio was the rooftop swimming pool. The infinity pool overlooked the Melaka River, offering a breathtaking view, especially during sunset. It was the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the atmosphere. For those who like to stay active, the decent-sized gym was well-equipped with modern facilities, making it easy to keep up with workouts even while on vacation.

Breakfast at The River Grill
Besides the Ramadan Buffet Preview feast we had the night before, breakfast at the hotel was also a delightful experience, with a semi-buffet spread alongside an à la carte menu. The semi-buffet spread includes dim sum, porridge, cereal, pancakes & pastries, coffee & tea. I was recommended to try their must-try, Portuguese Baked Eggs and Kaya Toast. The food was fresh and delicious, and the service was exceptional. The restaurant had a relaxing ambience, making it a great place to start the day.

Exploring Melaka on Two Wheels
A unique perk of staying at Casa del Rio was the option to rent a bicycle and explore the town. Riding through Melaka’s heritage streets at my own pace was an unforgettable experience. The bicycle rental service is available exclusively for in-house guests from 9.00am to 7.00pm with the first 2 hours complimentary, and subsequent hours at RM10 nett per hour. By the way, hotel guests enjoy complimentary parking too.

A Favourite Among Celebrities
It’s easy to see why Casa del Rio is a top choice for celebrities and well-known personalities. Even my favourite singer, DS Siti Nurhaliza stayed here before!

The combination of luxury, comfort, and impeccable service made my stay truly special. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable experience in Melaka.

Khuha Mountain Sunrise Hike, The Best Way to End 2024 Near Hat Yai

To end 2024 on a high note, my friends and I hiked up Khua Mountain in Rattaphum, about an hour drive from Hat Yai. We started in the dark, climbing up a manageable trail, less than 1km. By the time we reached the top, the sky was starting to light up. This spot is perfect for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Now, let me share my experience and tips to help you plan your own trip!

The Journey to Khuha Mountain
We started early, leaving our hotel in Hat Yai around 5:00AM to reach the trailhead before dawn. The hike itself is fairly moderate, but it’s always good to come prepared. Bring a torchlight, as it’s pitch dark when you start. Wear proper hiking shoes for grip, and pack enough water to stay hydrated. A light breakfast or snacks can help keep your energy up.

The Magical Sunrise
Reaching the summit just as the horizon lit up was worth every step. The sunrise was stunning—shades of orange, pink, and gold spread across the sky, marking the last sunrise of 2024. It felt surreal, and knowing it was the final sunrise of the year made it even more special.

Friendly Dogs and Fun Surprises
To our delight, some friendly dogs roamed the summit, wagging their tails and mingling with us and other hikers. They added a warm, playful touch to the experience. Nearby, a couple was having a cozy picnic. They generously let us borrow their setup for some impromptu photos, which turned out amazing!

What to Prepare
Here’s a quick checklist to ensure you’re ready for the hike:

  • Torchlight: Essential for the dark trail.
  • Hiking Shoes: For a safe and comfortable climb.
  • Water: Stay hydrated throughout the hike.
  • Light Breakfast: Pack something easy to eat for energy.
  • Camera or Phone: You’ll want to capture the incredible views!
  • Towel: To wipe off sweat. (optional)

Why You Should Go
Khuha Mountain isn’t just about the sunrise—it’s an experience. The trail, the views, the friendly dogs, and even the chance to meet kind strangers made it a fantastic way to end the year. Whether you’re into hiking or just looking for a peaceful escape, this place won’t disappoint.

Final Thoughts
If you’re near Hat Yai, I highly recommend taking this hike. Watching the last sunrise of 2024 from Khuha Mountain was unforgettable and a perfect way to reflect on the year. Here’s to more adventures in 2025!

Dine on the Boat Experience with Barahom Community in Pattani

Never have I imagined that I have this opportunity to discover an unforgettable cultural and culinary adventure with the Barahom community in Pattani, Thailand. This unique experience begins with a serene boat ride along the picturesque Di Chae River, winding through lush mangrove forests and offering breathtaking views of nature. Perfect for those seeking an authentic connection to local traditions, this journey blends tranquility, stunning landscapes, and delicious Malay kampung-style cuisine.

The Journey
The adventure begins at Barahom Barzaar, where friendly locals welcomed us aboard a traditional boat. The tranquil Di Chae River becomes our pathway to an untouched mangrove forest, a breathtaking natural reserve that sets the stage for a memorable lunch. As the boat glides gently through the water, we took in the sights and sounds of this beautiful ecosystem, making it as much about the journey as the destination. It was truly an unforgettable experience.

A Feast to Remember
The highlight of this experience is undoubtedly the meal—a spread of Nasi Ideh Kampung (Nasi Hidang Kampung in Bahasa Malaysia), a spread of classic Malay kampung-style dishes. Each dish is a testament to the rich culinary traditions of the region:

  • Ikan Selayang Goreng – Deep-fried mackerel, firm and flavourful.
  • Ikan Masak Lemak – Fish cooked in a creamy yellow coconut curry with a hint of spice.
  • Ulam with Sambal & Budu – Fresh local herbs served with spicy sambal and budu (fermented fish sauce) for an authentic taste.
  • Paku Masak Lemak – Wild fern cooked in a rich coconut milk gravy, offering a unique texture and flavor.
  • Telur Dadar – A simple yet satisfying dish of fried scrambled eggs.
  • Teh O Ais – Refreshing iced tea.

Every bite reflects the freshness of local ingredients and the skill of the cooks who have mastered these traditional recipes. My personal favourites definitely goes to the fried mackerels and ulam with sambal.

One-of-a-Kind Experience
Dining on a boat amidst the mangroves is more than just a meal; it’s an immersive cultural experience. You’ll gain insights into the Barahom community’s way of life and their harmonious relationship with nature. It’s an opportunity to connect with the people and flavors of Pattani in an intimate and unforgettable setting.

This unique boat dining experience is perfect for those seeking something different while exploring Pattani. Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or as a family, the Barahom Barzaar’s boat ride promises to leave you with cherished memories.

5 Reasons Why You Should Visit Bangkok Now

As someone who frequently visits Bangkok, I can confidently say it’s one of the most exciting and diverse cities in Southeast Asia. Known for its unique blend of tradition and modernity, the vibrant capital of Thailand is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking adventure, culture, and unforgettable experiences, especially during this festive season. From bustling markets and flavourful street food to serene temples and dynamic nightlife, Bangkok truly has it all. If you’re planning your next vacation, here are five compelling reasons why Bangkok should be at the top of your travel list right now.

#1 Christmas Decor
The Christmas decorations in Bangkok are nothing short of spectacular, especially with the buzz around Labubu and other Popmart characters adding a trendy twist to the festive season. Iconic malls such as CentralWorld, Siam Paragon, and ICONSIAM go all out with dazzling light displays, towering Christmas trees, and meticulously crafted holiday setups. Even the streets and smaller markets embrace the holiday spirit with festive decorations and cheerful music. It’s an ideal time to immerse yourself in the joyous atmosphere and snap picture-perfect moments with your loved ones.

#2 Street Food
Bangkok’s street food is legendary and a highlight for every visitor. The city is often referred to as the world’s street food capital for good reason. You can savour everything from the classic pad thai to spicy som tam (papaya salad) and grilled seafood. Sweet treats like mango sticky rice and roti with condensed milk are equally irresistible. Popular food hotspots like the newly opened Jodd Fairs and the Sukhumvit food stalls offer a chance to enjoy authentic Thai flavours at affordable prices. Every bite is a testament to the city’s rich culinary heritage with hints of urbanisation.

#3 Shopping Haven
Shopping in Bangkok is an experience like no other, offering everything from unique handmade goods to luxurious branded items. Chatuchak Weekend Market is a treasure trove of bargains, where you can find souvenirs, clothing, and accessories. Platinum Fashion Mall is a favourite for affordable yet stylish apparel, while Siam Paragon and ICONSIAM cater to those seeking luxury and high-end brands. Don’t miss the floating markets for a more traditional shopping experience, where you can buy everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts.

#4 Creative Exhibitions
Bangkok is currently buzzing with exciting creative events that showcase its vibrant cultural scene. One must-see is the ICONSIAM Bangkok Illumination 2024 x ROBBi, running until 25 December 2024. This dazzling event transforms the riverside into a spectacle of lights and art, featuring ROBBi installations that blend innovation and festive cheer. Another highlight is the Immersive Disney Animation at EMSPHERE, open until 29 December 2024. This magical experience brings beloved Disney stories to life through cutting-edge technology and interactive displays, making it perfect for visitors of all ages. There are many other events happening in Bangkok now until the end of the year!

#5 Vibrant Nightlife
Bangkok’s nightlife is as vibrant as its daytime attractions. Rooftop bars like Tribe, Sky Bar and Vertigo offer stunning views of the city’s skyline, complemented by world-class cocktails and fine dining. For those seeking more energy and excitement, places like Khao San Road, Soi Thonglor, and Silom buzz with activity, featuring live music, dancing, and plenty of opportunities to mingle with locals and travelers alike. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back evening or a night full of adventure, Bangkok’s nightlife has it all.

With its festive atmosphere, incredible food, endless shopping, inspiring creative spaces, and electrifying nightlife, Bangkok is a city that promises something for everyone. Now is the perfect time to explore its magic and create unforgettable memories in this one-of-a-kind destination.

Bonus: 7-Eleven
And while I’m on the topic of favourite spots, I can’t leave out 7-Eleven, which is a must-visit in Thailand. It’s not your ordinary convenience store—here, you’ll find everything from delicious ready-to-eat meals like spicy basil chicken rice to unique snacks and beverages that you can’t get elsewhere. I make it a point to pop into a 7-Eleven every time I’m in Bangkok, whether it’s for a quick bite, an iced coffee or simply to explore the latest offerings. It’s a little slice of convenience and culture that I always look forward to.
