Join in the Darkness – 60 Earth Hour

62 countries including Malaysia have committed to participate in WWF’s Earth Hour in 2009. This will be the first time Malaysia officially takes part in Earth Hour and our Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Abdullah bin Ahmad Badawi has indicated his support and endorsement of Malaysia’s participation.

The campaign, which hopes to reach out to more than one billion people in 1000 cities around the world, encourage individuals, businesses and governments to switch off lights for just one hour on Saturday March 28, 2009 at 8:30pm to convey their support for action on climate change. Cities already committed to Earth Hour include Los Angeles, Las Vegas, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, Rome, Manila, Oslo, Cape Town, Warsaw, Lisbon, Singapore, Istanbul, Mexico City, Toronto, Dubai and Copenhagen.

2009 is a critical year in terms of the political decisions that will be made at global climate negotiations in December 2009. Earth Hour, aims to highlight the voice of the people of the world and represent a visual mandate for meaningful policy on climate change.

If you would like to pledge your support of Earth Hour log on to http://www.earthhour.org/malaysia and sign up. If your company would like to participate in Earth Hour, please call WWF-Malaysia at Tel: +603 7803 3772 or Email: ARaj@wwf.org.my

I am trying to help in this activity, just playing a minimal part to save the earth. I urge everyone who’s read this to support the motion and participate in this meaningful "Earth Hour" campaign. What you can do is just to switch off all electricity and lights in the house for a mere ONE hour on 28 March 2009 starting from 8.30PM. Isn’t that simple? For just one hour, the electricity saved is sufficient to make a huge difference to the earth and most importantly, to us! Tote bags OR Plastic bags

Dear everyone (specifically for all shoppers / supermarket/ hypermarkets owners/ stalls operators and whoever),

Please stop using plastic bags to pack your goods. Bring your own recycle tote bags to pack them. This is to save the nature and the environment. Why should you do this? Simple – because you live in this world! And you have the responsibility to take care of it. Plastic cannot biodegrade easily and it will pollute the environment for a very long time. If it’s thrown in the sea, turtles may think that they are jellyfish and eat them causing them to die. Do you want this to happen to you where others give you something to eat and you die because of it? If yes, keep using plastic bags and feel free to throw them out of your windows. I wouldn’t block you.

I faced a very silly thing just now in Carrefour. Mein and I went to shop there just now and as usual brought our own tote bags. Before we entered, the security guard took out a big plastic bag and wanted us to put our environment-friendly bags into the plastic bag. I refused to do so. Then, I went to the customer service counter and told the lady to let us in as we just want to shop there with our own tote bags. She then led us to the security guard and told him to let us in. The security guard still insisted us to put our tote bags into a plastic bag. I hate this. I grabbed the smallest plastic bag there and put our stuff in. Story stopped!

What is the meaning of using a tote bag in a plastic bag???

Dear Carrefour (and other hypermarkets),

Please be more sensitive to the environment situation now and stop hiring security guards to bug shoppers who are carrying tote bags. We are of good intention to shop in your outlets and save our environment (which you are also staying in). If you are to encourage people to use their own bags, you can save a lot from stopping the use of plastic bags.

If you were me, what would you do? Will you bring your own tote bags in without putting them into a plastic bag or will you just carry your tote bag in a plastic bag?

plastic1 Our tote bags in a plastic bag… Yes, I know, it’s silly! But what can I do?

carrefour3 The security guard who was doing his job well (and his stack of plastic bags). It’s only the Management who needs to do something about the environment.

carrefour2 The row of electronic sensor to sense thieves and another security guard who was doing his job well. Then why still bother to hire the first security guard? Oh ya, I know! The first one was there to ‘waste’ plastics!

Save the Earth : What have I done?

recycle-one-thing-symbol
What have I done to play a part in helping to save the earth?
1. Use a non-woven recycle bag whenever I go for shopping.
2. Reduce the usage of plastic bags to pack my stuff.
3. Do not waste paper. If I print something wrongly on one page of the paper, I will keep it for future usage. As my rubbish paper.
4. Do not buy plastic bottled mineral water. I carry my own a stainless steel water bottle.
5. Switch off all electricity when not in use.
6. Turn off the tap whenever not using. Even during the time I brush my teeth and soap myself at bath.
7. Donate all my old clothes, books and toys to charity organisations.
8. While driving, I don’t excelerate. I drive at a slow, steady and smooth pace. Do not brake unnecessarily.
9. I only read online newspaper.
10. Walk, instead of drive, to a short destination.
11. Reduce usage of tissue paper.

I am still trying my best to play a part in helping to save the earth. Let’s together play a small role to make the place we live a better place. Remember : This is the ONLY planet we can live in (at least for the time-being!).

Haze-zardous

The air in KL (and most part of the country) is hazy since last two days. It is claimed that the haze is caused by the burning forest in Indonesia. (But there were NO formal news and report about this… yet) The Malaysian government has decided to avoid discussing this topic openly and refused to report the latest air pollution index in the news openly. This is to ensure that the haze will not affect the tourism industry in the country.

Personally, I think that there is no need to blame anyone about the haze or the report of the haze. All we need to do as human-being is to do our part to protect the earth. Do not make open burning and also avoid using too much of CFC material. Drink more water to ensure the body can detoxify easier and keep our body moist.
