Volunteering in The Burden Run 2014 by MetConX

Mein and I have been running in races, trails and other running events since 2008. But we have not acted as a volunteer before (as those behind-the-scene people).

Us @ #theburdenrun2014

When MetConX announced that they are organising The Burden Run, I checked my schedule and found out that I may not be able to run due to work commitment. Therefore, I gave up signing up. Nearer to the date, I realised that I am available in the morning session. So, I registered to help them when they were looking for volunteers.

Many asked why didn’t I run. A simple answer. Because I want to try volunteering.

I’m really glad that I could contribute a little in this event. That’s because I am so close with the organising team especially with Dann, Ody, Tom, Wan and the other MetConX group.

The evening before the event day, we were required to attend a briefing in the stadium in UM. That was also the bib collection day for runners. During the briefing, Mein volunteered to be in the water station group while I in the marshall group. I will be based in the 3km spot. Excited!

The event day has arrived. We met up with our respective team leaders in UM at and were stationed to our spots as early as 5am. That’s not early compared to those masterminds behind the whole event who have been there since the day before.

Mein joined her water station team whole I actually drove to the 3km spot with another fellow volunteer, Hidayat. Great to know someone who was as sincere and passionate. He just touched down in KL from his hometown in Perak and will be leaving back to Perak the same day! Salute.

Me after cheering the runners and cleaning up the street

The event started at 7am. My function there before flag off was to direct driving participants to the stadium direction. A few FAQs from the drivers were :

a) Is there parking near the starting line?

b) Is there surau for prayers?

c) Where is the loo? 🙂

Once flag-off, I waited anxiously for the first few runners. Who could that be? True enough, the first two runners are Kenyans. Cheered them and continued waiting for the second waves of runners.

Not long after, the following waves arrived. I kept cheering for them while reminding them to keep on their left as vehicles are diverted to use the right lane.

Saw many familiar faces and runner friends. I felt so touched to have so many friends who are still into running. To name a few; James Fong, Adam Heng, Lorrine, Melvin Chong, Letch, Lilian Lee, Shear Ling, Yam, Elgy Tan, Joe Liew, Advance Tan, Jonathan, Alvin Gan, Andrew Pang and Regina Ho.

Upon the arrival of the final wave, Hidayat and I quickly helped out to clean up the used cups thrown on the floor by runners. (So happen that the water station was very nearby).

This road was full of used cups before we cleaned it. Thank you, Hidayat for the help! Both of us did great! 🙂

Mein helped to clean up too! 🙂

And distributing water to runners…

Hidayat and I left the 3km spot and water station as our duty there has ended. I drove back to the stadium and helped Dann in diverting traffic in front of the stadium. There were big buses and other vehicles going from both directions and runners were running on the same road. Again, I met with so many old buddies whom had just completed the run. Well done, guys!

When the traffic and numbers of runners running reduced, we walked back to the stadium and I took this chance to catch up with my friends. I always like the feeling of having them around. This group of energetic and positive people. I love you all! 🙂

The last task was to transfer all the used sandbags into the big waste container at the back of the stadium. Everyone teamed up and formed a human caterpillar, transfering the bags from one end to another. Within seconds, mission accomplised. Good job and awesome teamwork. Thanks for the wonderful experience! And well done on the great success.

Shopping with Zalora is Easy

It was New Year day and I was at a mall hunting for a pair of shoes for work. Mission failed! They are either too expensive or out of size. I went home empty handed. But my wife bought hers.

Not giving up, I went shopping online. I started googling and FB-ing. Then I saw Zalora’s ad at a corner of my FB page. Clicked on it and browsed. La la la… (happily browsing) and found out that they are giving 15% off on selected items. Narrowed my options to these and ta-daa… I found a pair which only cost RM44.00 before less. Masuk dalam shopping cart terus!

Free shipping for purchase more than RM75. Tempting… continued shopping for shirts since it’s about time to refresh my wardrobe. Masuk satu lagi baju dalam shopping cart. Great! Cukup quota.

Checked out and made payment. Senang je beli online.

Shop > Pay > Wait > Wear

Better than going out to the mall. Jimat parking, petrol, energy and other extra expenses like food while you are in the mall.

My parcel reached me on 3 January. Within 2 days, dah receive my order. Kan senang… life is easy with online shopping!!! Thanks Zalora

Perhaps, that’s also why I am in this business. I want to make your life easy too  🙂

My Favourite Christmas Deco in A Mall – Bangsar Shopping Centre (BSC)

Christmas 2013 just passed more than a week ago. Saw a few Christmas deco in malls. I personally like the one in BSC. It carries the Christmas dinner table theme with gigantic roasted turkey and chicken, tall standing cakes and puddings, huge bowls of meatballs and other food you can find on a dining table. All in super large scales. I salute the team of masterminds behind this project. If only I know who you are and have the chance, I hope to work with you guys one day.

On the same day, we went to Bangsar Village and found out that their deco was relatively less impressive. But good effort for bringing the Lego mascots into the picture.

Busan Trip (Day 4) – Final

It was basically our last day to travel around Busan. The next day was just to travel from the hotel to airport for departure. We started our journey to Taejongdae Park. We walked from the hotel to the bus station near Lotte departmental store in Nampodong to take bus no. 30 to Taejongdae Terminus.

busan_dixon (126)

Yeah!!! We have arrived

Upon arriving the park entrance, we went for a toilet break and hiked up to its Danubi Tramcar ticket counter. There is no entrance fee to enter the park if you choose to walk. Being a tourist, taking the tramcar to travel around the park is definitely a wiser option. Just hop on and hop off the tramcar when you reach its stops. The fee for this tramcar ride was 1,500 won per pax. Among the attractive spots we went to were the Natural Observation Path, Taejongsa Temple, the Lighthouse, Observation deck and the Gumyeongsa Temple.

After a long trip at the Taejongdae Park, we went for a lunch and took a bus back to Nampodong. Our next station was Gwangalli Beach. We took the subway to Gwangan station and came out from Exit 3 or 5. Keep walking towards the beach direction. Road signs are available everywhere.

busan_dixon (132)

Our lunch – side dishes were more than the main dish. Only 8,000 won for this meal. Hahaha!

The Gwangan Bridge welcomed us at its horizon. It was such a scenic view! And there were so many coffee shops along the whole stretch of road. Us being coffee addicts jumped in to one of the cafe to enjoy a cuppa. We chose Angel in Us. Not bad! We loved the environment and ambience.

Busan Trip (Day 3)

busan_dixon (115)

We went to Gamcheon Culture Village on Day 3. Took the subway to Toseong station and come out at Exit 6. Walk to a junction and turn right. Walk until we reached a bus stop in front of a hospital (more like a cancer centre). Took a bus no. 2-2. Alighted when we reach the entrance of the village. The entrance is located right in front of a primary school. In fact, there were many people alighted here. That’s why we didn’t miss it.

busan_dixon (164)

This place is all about colours!

We looked for a tourist information centre with the help of an English-speaking volunteer tourist guide and bought a map (2,000 won) there. This map shows the whole structure of the village. With this map, you can actually collect stamps at certain spots around the village and there are two locations which you can exchange for postcards. Without this map, the fun might not be as great. Tips : Wear sports shoes because travelling around this village requires a lot of walking and hiking. To return to Toseong subway station, just walk across the road at the entrance just now and wait for the bus (no. 2 or 2-2).

As we did not want to tire ourselves too much, we took the subway back to Nampodong area and went to the Busan Tower in Yongdusan Park. Entrance ticket to the observatory deck was 4,000 won per pax. We went up to the deck and viewed Busan at 360 degree. Here, an employee spoke with us and pointed out some attractions around. busan_dixon (188)

One of them which caught my attention was Gukje Market. So wait no more! We headed towards the direction and reached Gukje Market. It was located plus minus 10 minutes walk from the tower. Too many things to see in this market. And many street food around. busan_dixon (119)

busan_dixon (121)

Enjoying ice cream in the cold. Too good to be true!

Walking and sightseeing around Gukje Market leaded us back to the Christmas Tree Festival street. We had a very special dinner there. A restaurant where you BBQ your own squids. I loved it sooo much! Must try for those who love new experience. busan_dixon (187)

A recommended restaurant for dinner

busan_dixon (123)

Self service! 🙂

busan_dixon (122)

This meal cost about 22,000 won for two pax. Comes with the squids, some side dishes (refillable) and rice

Also, we went to Lotte supermarket nearby. Bought some souvenirs and to our surprise, they actually give discount of 500 won for bringing our own non-woven bag. Great initiative to encourage people bring their own bags and save mother Earth. busan_dixon (183)

This is how they sell durian and mangosteen in Korean
